(This is the fourth of ten beliefs in our series.)

The belief that “I can heal all by myself” really is true.  You can, and do, heal yourself all the time.  All healing is ultimately self-healing.  The mind can instruct the body to heal, even instantly. Cells that are malfunctioning can become healthy again when their environment becomes healthy.

So why is this a limiting belief?  Quite simply, because we do not live in an ideal world. We have developed a lot of limiting and negative beliefs that keep us from healing some of our  illnesses.  Our bodies are bombarded with toxins they aren’t equipped to deal with. Modern life has us living in states of continual unhealthy stress.  We seldom slow down and bring ourselves into harmony of mind, body and spirit. Sometimes we just need the wisdom and experience of someone else to get us to a place, mentally and/or physically, where we can begin the self-healing process.

Actually, I’m not sure that ‘I can heal by myself’ is a very prevalent true limiting belief when it comes to more serious problems.  I think it pops up more as a reaction to circumstances or other beliefs.  “I SHOULD be able to heal by myself, after all I know all these techniques, did all this inner work, prayed to God…”

There’s great wisdom in knowing when to seek help and when to dip into your self-healing toolbox. The danger of sticking with ‘I can heal myself’ is that in more serious situations waiting to get help can seriously compromise your chances of recovering.

People have died trying to self-heal when a routine surgery or course of antibiotics would have easily taken care of the problem. For most of us, a set bone will likely heal better than one left to knit on its own.

If you aren’t sure if you need help or not, gather information. Do your own research and consult experts. Get tests done to see what’s going on in your body.

Use this information to make informed decisions about how you want to initiate your healing process.  Spend time in meditation or prayer. Tap your intuition. Listen to your inner guidance and even your fears.  What can you do for yourself? Do you need lifestyle changes or natural remedies?  Do you want to speed your natural healing processes along?  Would you benefit from the help of a coach, healer or medical professional?

Sometimes, you can accomplish more in a few sessions with a good coach, doctor or therapist than in years by yourself.  Even experienced healers seek  help.   A smart doctor rarely doctors herself.

Here’s an example from my own experience.

Several years ago I got some not-so-pretty facial injuries and a concussion from a bike accident.  As I lay in bed that night I was awakened by the  pain of oozing wounds.  I did some quiet energy healing for my face. Interestingly, I began to cry,  so I figured it was time to use this new method I was learning called  the Emotional Freedom Technique. After an intensive hour of intuitive tapping in response to the messages my mind, spirit, and body relayed, the pain completely vanished. Over the course of the next week  my face  healed rapidly with no pain or scarring.

I wasn’t so successful with the wooziness and pain in my neck. I could relieve it for a little while, but it kept coming back.  Finally,  I decided I needed help.  I still remember the head rush and relief as my chiropractor freed up the blocked spinal fluid.  Why did I wait so long?

Going it alone?

There are lots of reasons why we don’t ask for help.

  • don’t want to spend the money
  • don’t believe anyone could help
  • takes too much time
  • not really motivated to change
  • ego tells me I can do it myself
  • want to prove this technique/method/food/supplement will do it
  • benefits to staying ill
  • poor experiences with doctors/healers/remedies in the past
  • denial

The truth is, that even though I used EFT alone for my face pain successfully, I had the help of Gary Craig’s training for the EFT basics. Without him I would’ve never known about this tool. Ditto for the other healing methods I know.

Getting help when it’s needed is not a sign that you failed at healing yourself, it’s wisdom. It’s part of facilitating your self-healing. Going it alone can be frustrating and unproductive unless you are clear about how to heal yourself, are very insightful and objective with yourself,  and have motivation with aligned conscious and subconscious goals.

Do believe you can heal yourself.   Your body and mind are capable of miraculous healing.  Sometimes they just need a little help.
